Sexy photos in the picture
It might be chilly outside, but Chantal Benoit's mission is to generate a lot of steam in the bedrooms of many of her clients this Valentine's day. Since January, Chantal Benoit Photographer, has been taking bookings and snapping boudoir photos of Ottawa wives and girlfriends who will present scantily clad images of themselves to their significant others today.
The boudoir photographer is an increasingly popular way for women to inspire a partner and preserve her own beauty, Benoit says. Usually a bit nervous when they show up for a sitting, Benoit lets clients relax briefly in solitude in a candlelit bedroom with a glass of wine and soft music in the background. It doesn't take long before they're ready, she says.
"I set up a nice atmosphere. The glass of wine usually works," she chuckles. Benoit says the art of boudoir photography dates back to the turn of century, when women would capture a black and white silhouette for their husbands as they prepared to leave for war.
How things have changed. Today's images are much racier and often reflect the partner's preferences, hobbies or occupation. One client showed up for her sitting with a Senator's jersey and hockey gear, another with a hunter's camouflage, bow and arrow.
Benoit founded her business just a few months after her wedding in 1993, when her wedding photographer offered to train her. She admits she didn't no much about photography at the time. "I had no idea what an F-stop was," she says. But she pursued the career by enrolling in photography classes at La cite Collegial and Algonquin college. Wedding provide the bulk of her business, but Benoit is trying to build on the boudoir bookings.
By the time she retires, she would like to publish a book of her work. "But I'm just 35, so I have a long way to go", she jokes. Benoit has flirted with the idea of expanding her business, but enjoys the flexibility of a sole proprietorship.
"Bigger does not necessarily mean better," she says. "Right now, I'm really happy with what I have"
